I am writing today to share my perspective as the National President of the Fraternal Order of Police, the nation’s oldest and largest law enforcement labor organization, with respect to the articles of impeachment against Alejandro N. Mayorkas, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
We recognize that the crisis at the border has become unsustainable. Our members see the consequences of the unsecured border in almost every community in the country, not just in border towns. I will offer, however, that since Secretary Mayorkas took the helm of the Department, the interaction and cooperation between DHS law enforcement components and State and local law enforcement has increased considerably. Working partnerships between local agencies and DHS on violent crime and the fentanyl epidemic are having meaningful impacts in our communities and that is due in no small measure to Secretary Mayorkas’ commitment to law and order and his leadership on the issue of public safety. We value our relationship with the Secretary and the Department and believe that local and State agencies have greatly benefited from their partnerships with the DHS.
