Dear Mr. President,
I am writing on behalf of the members of the Fraternal Order of Police to advise you of our disgust with public statements on social media by the Principal Deputy Communications Director in the U.S. Department of the Interior, Tyler Cherry, and to demand that you ask for his resignation.
The repugnant, anti-police rhetoric asserted so strongly by Mr. Cherry on social media undermines the bonds between police officers and the communities they protect and puts the officers in the field in greater jeopardy. It also undermines law enforcement morale at a time when agencies at every level are struggling to retain and recruit good officers—denigrating their service and their value to our community and country makes these challenges even more difficult.
While Mr. Cherry is free to share his ignorant, abhorrent view with whomever he chooses, he has an obligation to represent, respect, and support the more than 3,000 men and women serving as law enforcement officers in the U.S. Department of the Interior. He has spectacularly failed to do so. We count on our Federal officials to lead and lead by example. Mr. Cherry has brought disrepute and dishonor to the Department and must leave his current post immediately.
On behalf of the more than 373,000 members of the Fraternal Order of Police, I urge you to demand the resignation of Tyer Cherry for conduct unbecoming of a Federal official and a human being.
