Dear Senators Cornyn and Klobuchar,
I am writing on behalf of the members of the Fraternal Order of Police to advise you of our support for S. 3946, the “Abolish Human Trafficking Reauthorization Act.”
Each year, tens of thousands of people are illegally trafficked into and around the United States. This modern-day slavery is one of the largest and fastest growing criminal industries in the world, estimated to generate well over $100 billion in illegal profits. Sadly, victims of human trafficking often suffer from lifelong emotional and physical trauma due to the abuse and hardships they incur while being trafficked.
Your bill would reauthorize the Abolish Human Trafficking Act until 2027. With this law in full force, law enforcement around the country will continue to have the tools they need to arrest, prosecute, and imprison those who engage in human trafficking. In addition to reauthorizing current law, the bill establishes several new funding streams and grant programs that would go towards prosecuting suspected traffickers, protecting and supporting victims, and preventing trafficking at the source. The bill also gives more discretion to judges in cases where victims commit crimes against their abusers.
